Pedal Power for a Purpose: Chichester Bike Project Partners with Re-Cycle

At Chichester Bike Project, we believe that every bike has the power to change a life—and not just locally. That’s why we’re proud to announce our support for Re-Cycle, a brilliant UK charity working to provide affordable, sustainable transport in Africa through the donation of pre-owned bicycles.

Giving Bikes a Second Life

Every year, thousands of bicycles in the UK end up unused, forgotten in sheds, or worse—sent to landfill. Re-Cycle steps in to transform these unwanted bikes into life-changing tools for individuals and communities across seven African countries: South Africa, Ghana, Zambia, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Malawi, and Nigeria.

Now in their 28th year, Re-Cycle has refined the model: they collect bikes donated by the UK public, ship them to local partners in Africa who refurbish and distribute them to people who have no other transport options. These bikes make it possible for children to get to school, for farmers to bring produce to market, and for health workers to reach remote villages.

How Chichester Bike Project is Getting Involved

As part of our commitment to sustainability and social impact, Chichester Bike Project will now be donating unrefurbishable bikes to Re-Cycle—giving them the opportunity to serve a second purpose overseas, rather than becoming waste.

We already receive generous donations of bikes from our local community. While many are restored and rehomed right here in Chichester, some are beyond local repair or outside the scope of our needs. These are the bikes that will now be forwarded on to Re-Cycle, ensuring nothing goes to waste.

How You Can Help

  • Donate a bike: If you’ve got an old or unused bike, bring it to us. If we can refurbish it locally, great! If not, it may still go on to make a difference across the world.
  • Spread the word: Let friends and neighbours know about this initiative. The more bikes we can collect, the more lives we can touch—both in Chichester and abroad.
  • Support Re-Cycle directly: Find out more or donate via their website at www.re-cycle.org.

Together, we can reduce waste, promote sustainable travel, and help others unlock new opportunities—just by rethinking where our bikes go next.

Thank you for pedalling alongside us for a better world.
