EARN-A-BIKE

The Earn-a-Bike initiative enables individuals facing long-term barriers to employment the opportunity to refurbish and keep a donated bike.

This programme promotes self-reliance and self-confidence through the opportunity to learn, acquire new skills and gain practical experience, providing a pathway to access affordable and sustainable transportation options. To an individual who has been struggling to make it on their own and dealing with the realities of housing insecurity, a bike can mean so much more – employment, confidence, fun and self-care!

How to book
Book on our What’s On page or give us a call on 01243 537526.
Alternatively, email us at: [email protected]

You’ll pay a visit to our Shopwhyke site at an agreed time, where you’ll work with one of our team members to complete the final repairs on an upcycled bicycle. You do not need any previous experience, and you will be guided through at all times. This is an interactive session so you will need to be prepared to be hands-on and get involved! This session typically spans approximately two hours and will help you to improve your bike maintenance skills, allowing you to keep your bike running for longer. At the end of the session, the bike becomes your very own!

To ensure your bike remains in tip-top shape or to address any potential issues, you will have free access to our weekly Fix-a-Bike workshops. During these sessions, a dedicated team of volunteers and qualified mechanics will be available to offer their assistance.

These sessions can be by self-referral or referral by an established organisation or charity. They are for those who have been involuntarily unemployed for 6 months or more. We work in collaboration with many organisations around Chichester.

This may include those:

  • Seeking asylum with refugee status and unable to work
  • With ongoing mental or physical health problems
  • With learning difficulties
  • Who are homeless / in supported / sheltered accommodation.
  • Undergoing substance abuse recovery programme
  • On probation

EARN-A-BIKE YOUTH

This programme is available to young people from low-income families, looked after children and asylum seekers. This session takes place at our ‘After school bikes’ session and the young person will work alongside one of our team for around 1.5 hours to do the finishing repairs and set up an upcycled bike. The young person will then be able to take the bike away with them.

We accept referrals from the following, however, do get in touch if you need further advice or would like to make a referral on behalf of a young person that you know.
